“Imagine the wonderful and ominous love between Siegmund abd Siegelind; Wodan in his deeply secret attitude towards their love; then with his altercation with Fricka and the fury of his self-coercion when – on moral grounds – he bids Siegmund’s death; and lastly imagine the magnificent Valkyrie Brünnhilde who, sensing Wodan’s inner inclination, defies the god and is punished by him …” Effusively Richard Wagner (1813–1883) told his friend and future father-in-law Franz Liszt in 1851 of his mammoth project “The Ring of the Nibelung”, which at that time had found its final concept as a tetralogy. After the prelude “Rheingold” was to follow “Die Walküre” as first day of the festival stage drama. Today this part of the Ring cycle remains the most popular in the public’s favour.

This “Die Walküre” is part of the much-admired “Ring” cycle staged by Kurt Horres in 1990/91.
